Kölner Aqua Size

Kölner Aqua Size is a water-based gilding adhesive best suited for indoor use and for metal leaves thicker than genuine gold leaf, such as imitation gold, silver, copper, variegated, and colored leaves. The wait time after applying the size and gilding is about 30 minutes. The quick adhesive is water-based and water-dilutable. When applying with a foam roller, adding a few drops of defoamer is recommended.

Kölner Aqua Size can only be applied as thinly as oil mixtion, so it is only partially suitable for gold leaf. It is ideal for imitation gold leaf and other metal leaf.

• Coverage: approx. 150 ml per square meter (5 fluid ounces per 10 square feet)

Kölner Aqua Size is water-based and must be protected against freezing. It cannot be shipped at temperatures below 32 °F (0 °C).

How to Apply Kölner Aqua Size

1. The surface must be dust-free and, if possible, non-absorbent.

2. Apply the size with a soft and fine hair brush.

3. Wait for about 15 minutes till the size becomes tacky, not wet or dry.

4. You now have up to 60 hours to gild before the size becomes dry. The drying time is affected by temperature, humidity, and the gilding surface.

5. When gilding with imitation metal leaf, it is best to use Gilder’s Gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints on the metal leaf, as fingerprints will appear after you finish gilding.

6. To apply metal leaves onto the surface without scratching the metal leaves, use Gilder’s Gloves.

For gilding glass, metal, and plastic, Kölner Permacoll HA has the same application as the Kölner Aqua Size, but it is further developed to enable a higher polish on these types of surfaces.
