Zinc Sulfate (monohydrate), in the past called "white vitriol," is used as a drier for oil paint and drying oils, such as in English Patent Drier.

Zinc Sulfate is a white crystalline, water-soluble compound. The hydrated form, zinc sulfate heptahydrate, the mineral goslarite, was historically known as "white vitriol" and can be prepared by reacting zinc with aqueous sulfuric acid. Zinc sulfate heptahydrate is used in making lithopone, as a mordant in dyeing, as a preservative for skins and leather and in medicine as an astringent and emetic. Monohydrate or anhydrous zinc sulfate is used as a drier for oil paint and drying oils, such as in English Patent Drier.

Pale Drying Oil Recipe

A pale drying oil was made as follows:

Boil 1 quart linseed oil and 2 ounces powdered calcined white vitriol (zinc sulfate monohydrate) with 1 quart water, until the water evaporates; allow to settle and decant.
