Wood Rosin (Staybelite Ester)
Pale, nonoxidizing, color-stable resin used as a painting medium for tempera emulsions and oil paints. Learn more.
Wood Rosin (Staybelite Ester Resin)
Staybelite Ester is the glycerol ester of partially hydrogenated wood rosin. It is a pale, thermoplastic resin with excellent resistance to oxidation and discoloration. It has found wide acceptance as a tackifying resin for many adhesive applications, particularly pressure sensitive and emulsion types. In general, it is useful where there is need for pale, nonoxidizing, and color stable resin.
It is compatible with other resins, waxes, and plasticizers; with natural and synthetic rubbers, chlorinated rubber, and ethylcellulose; with EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) copolymers and low molecular weight polyethylene; with SIS (styrene-isoprene-styrene) and SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) block copolymers; with APAO (amorphous poly-alphaolefins); with acrylic resins; with certain polyamide resins and polyurethane compounds; and with PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone), polyvinylbutyral, nitrocellulose, drying oils and alkyd resins.
It is soluble in esters; ketones; higher alcohols; glycol ethers; and aliphatic, aromatic, and chlorinated hydrocarbons. Insoluble in ethanol and water.
Benefits
Staybelite Ester is superior to wood rosin in that it has exceptionally pale color, is resistant to oxidation and discoloration, and has a wide solubility and compatibility range greater than ordinary non-hydrogenated rosin.
Applications
• Component in thermoplastic mixtures for polishing wax, sealing wax and encaustic wax.
• Used in the preparation of synthetic resins and metal resinates.
• Used in most applications where rosin is used.
